In my Mass Effect game I want the players to feel empowered to improvise and surprise me. I also want the mechanics to reflect that doing the unexpected or going outside their powers is a good idea.

Neal has done some work on using skills to gain bonuses to your attack. This is absolutely the kind of direction I’m looking at – rolling a skill check to gain some bonus, with a consequent penalty for failure. The DCs should be about right to make sure that players attempt it at critical moments without it being an automatic success.

Things to think about:
Krogan using Intimidate to gain melee bonuses.
Using Athletics or Acrobatics to gain a melee bonus or cover bonus or movement bonus.
Persuade being affected by Paragon or Renegade points.
